Who is the Centre for?

Where is the Centre located?
It is located on the 9th floor of the School of Philosophy building, Room 905, opposite the Faculty Library.

When is the Centre open? 
The Centre is open daily, Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 18:00 pm, during the semester. Any changes in the working hours are announced at the beginning of the academic year.

What are the aims of the Centre? 
The Self-Access Centre aims to familiarise all students of the Faculty with autonomous learning, information and communication technologies and the new media. Specifically, the Centre aims to enhance students’ English language proficiency, to provide self-study and personalised study of the courses taught in the Faculty, to enable students develop self-study techniques,  to develop the students’ critical awareness of the English language, to provide programmes for self-directed work and to produce a variety of materials for self-study work.

What is self-access language learning? 
Learners learn in different ways. Self-access learning gives you the opportunity to develop initiative, responsibility, self-awareness, confidence and independence in learning. To cater for individual needs and preferences, the Self-Access Centre offers a range of facilities and materials. This enables you to make choices to suit your personal learning styles and decide what and how you want to learn. In order to make these choices you first need to know what the Centre’s available materials are. To do this, take a look at the catalogues with available materials.

What can I do at the Centre? 
In the fully equipped Centre, you have access to the Internet and to on-line and off-line study materials concerning language development, academic literacy skills and reading materials for the various courses you take during your studies. For instance, you may use the computers to prepare research papers, search bibliography through the Internet, use multimedia programmes to enhance your English language proficiency, use available materials (DVDs and audio cassettes with academic lectures, on-line resources), receive and send emails and access on-line services of the University of Athens (e.g. e-class). You also have the opportunity to enhance your ICT skills by attending Web tutorials and other seminars offered by the Centre throughout the academic year.

What equipment does the Centre have? 
The Centre is equipped with latest technology computers with broadband internet connection.

Where can I find the Center’s available educational materials? 
In the catalogues available in the Centre and in the Centre website.

How can I borrow materials from the Centre? 
Ask the Centre staff to give you the materials you have chosen. For audio materials you will also be given a set of headphones. You leave an ID certification which is given back to you when you return the materials. Please notice that materials may not leave the Centre.

What do I need to do in order to use the Centre computers? 
Reserve a place in advance with the Centre staff or simply drop by. In case there is a computer available, you may use it.
